Sailing tour to the hidden gems of Crete
When God created Crete, he was especially generous with its southern side. Within a very short distance, he fit the most beautiful places, stunning secluded beaches, and picturesque coves with crystal-clear, deep blue waters in an environment perfect for exploration. Towering mountains rise just above this paradise, their peaks holding snow until late summer, offering the unique experience of traveling between the sea breeze and the mountain air.
The limited tourist development of the Sfakia region makes you feel as if you have stepped into another era, as there are no roads—transportation is only by boat or on foot. Thus, the prevailing sound is one of tranquility, occasionally broken only by the shifting of our sails!
Leaving behind us the port of Sfakia, we will sail out to sea, letting the wind fill our sails, and soon we will be swimming at Glyka Nera, perhaps the most beautiful beach in Crete. This stunning beach is fed year-round by fresh water from the White Mountains. The mix of seawater and mountain spring water creates a unique effect, making for an extraordinary swimming experience. With our sails opening once again, we will set course for Marmara, a breathtaking natural cove at the exit of the Aradena Gorge, where we will drop anchor for another swim.
The waters of southern Crete are so clear that visibility exceeds 30 meters! Naturally, there are harmless fish to observe in their natural habitat, but the highlight of the area is swimming inside the natural sea caves, making the experience truly unique. Here, the water’s colors shift depending on your perspective, and each of the many caves invites exploration.
On the deck of our sailboat, under the shade of our large canopy, a delicious snack awaits, accompanied by white wine, giving us the energy for the next refreshing dip in the bay of Loutro. Loutro was once an ancient trading port, its orientation making it completely sheltered from all winds.
Later, it became the best refuge for sailors and fishermen of southern Crete. Today, it is the gem of the region, built amphitheatrically, featuring small hotels and tavernas serving local products from Chania.
Loutro is perhaps the most famous vacation destination in southern Crete, as travel here is still only possible by boat—there are no roads, making you feel as though you are on a remote island. Our boat will anchor in the middle of this stunning bay, where you can either swim or simply bask in the sun, enjoying an unforgettable sensation. Before our return, we will take one last swim on a secluded beach before heading back to the port of Sfakia.
