Information about Sfakia

Sfakia is on the southwest side of Crete and is 70 kilometers from Chania. The route to get there is very beautiful and with a very good quality road that was reconstructed in 2022 and the duration of the route is about an hour. Sfakia is a very large area difficult to access due to the mountainous relief and one of the unruly places in times of war. In Sfakia is the most beautiful coastline of Crete with the most isolated beaches that have no road connection, as well as many small seaside villages such as Loutro ta Marmara and Ag. Roumeli which are only connected by sea. In Sfakia is also the gorge of Samaria, but also four other big gorges such as Aradena, Kladou tis Tripiti and Iligka. Also in Sfakia belong most of the high peaks in the White Mountains and of course the highest which is Pachnes. The inhabitants of Sfakia are mainly engaged in animal husbandry and agriculture, while in the last 20 years there has been a mild tourism development with good quality small hotels and rooms for rent. The best places to visit in Sfakia are the town of Sfakia which has a small port, Loutro, the Sweet waters and the Marmaras, while very beautiful and picturesque are in Ag. Roumeli which also has a small port there.
