Southern paradise
Just 24 miles south of Sfakia is the island of Gavdos, the island where Calypso trapped Odysseus. There are very few tourist infrastructures and the visitor can enjoy nature and the wonderful beaches without the slightest human intervention. There are beautiful bays on each side of the island that allow anchoring depending on the direction of the wind, while there is sand everywhere and relatively shallow waters near the shores. The small harbor offers very good protection during the summer months when only north and west winds prevail and exploring the island on foot is relatively easy. The most beautiful places to visit by boat are Trypiti on the south side with the famous wooden chair, Potamos which is on the west and has beautiful blue-green waters with golden sand from the clay that exists in the area. Equally impressive places are Lavrakas and Sarakinikos which has many good taverns with fresh fish. In Sarakinikos you can beam very close to the shore safely but you need to be careful when there are north winds as you create waves.
